Secret Lives

Lucid Dreams

Chris Hayers

I was standing in the stairway to the shadows of a dream
With the ghosts of those who loved me and the people I had been
There were mirrors in the hallway and candles on the floor
Each and every doorway had no handles on the door

I can hear the broken crying from the rooms that lay behind
Each one must have a memory of something I’ve denied
I’m running through forgotten times like tunnels in my mind
Looking for the things I cannot hide

I stand condemned to silence for the things I can’t recall
By the fantasies of children and the sins that haunt us all
Light your sacred fire and pass me through the flames
Make another sacrifice of shame

There are many ways to darkness, there are many ways to fall
They are sleeping in the doorways of your soul
You can see the ones love’s turned away in some salvation hall
Waiting for the grace that saves us all

I can hear the broken crying from the rooms that lay behind
Each one must have a memory of something I’ve denied
I’m running through forgotten times like tunnels in my mind
Looking for the things I cannot hide

There are things I cannot tell you – secret lives I’ve led
You will see the names I’ve taken in the places of the dead
And I hope you find the photograph of those I’ve left behind
Most of them are children of my mind
They’re calling out for mercy, they are reaching out for love
They are falling through my memories like rain
